Dr. John Antel

Dean, College of Liberal Arts & Social Studies
The University of Houston

Recipient of AFA Houston’s Educator of the Year Award for 2008
For His Dedication and Support for the Principles of Air Force Aerospace Leadership

Friend and mentor of the Air Force ROTC Detachment at UH and each and everyone of the cadets involved at the University of Houston is the best way to describe Dean Antel. He is a leader, motivator, teacher and caregiver to the young cadets who are preparing themselves to serve our country as future leaders of the Air Force.

He is a man that makes it happen. Listed among his many credits are the initial establishment of the unit in 2003, the allocation of facilities to house the unit along with Army ROTC that are second to none in universities around the country, the teaching of Air Force and military leadership principles to other non-military students at the university, and the outreach of UH ROTC programs to a myriad of universities and colleges in the Houston area so that they can have the benefits of applied leadership that these units bring to their campuses. Thanks in great measure to Dean Antel’s support, Detachment 003 at UH has been the fastest growing AFROTC unit in the nation for the past two years.

As a true educator, Dean Antel leads by example and is a man of vision who understands the needs of all students. He has long been a resource person who has looked after the needs of young students and has done everything in his power to help them.

These are just a few of the reasons of why we are awarding Dean Antel the highest aerospace education honor we can bestow, that of Educator of the Year.

Dean Antel grew up in San Francisco, married a lovely Speech Pathologist, Susan, who is the Director of Special Education at Klein ISD.

He worked as a bartender while obtaining his degrees at the University of California’s Berkeley and Los Angeles campuses. His wife explains why he is so robust and healthy and what greater experience can you have dealing with people than as a bartender. He earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science at the Berkeley campus in 1972 and received his PhD in Economics in 1983 from the Los Angeles campus in 1983. He was no stranger to the military even in those days. He left bartending to work for RAND Corporation co-authoring studies in military retention and attrition and was a forefather of the all volunteer force.

Dr. Antel joined the University of Houston Economics Department in 1981 and served as Economics Department Chair prior to assuming his present duties as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Studies.

Dean Antel loves to talk about his son, Matthew, who is a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy and a F-18F Navy pilot on active duty as well as his son Joseph, baseball player extraordinaire.

Dean Antel’s son, Navy Lt Matt Antel, at the controls of his F-18F Super Hornet built for the Navy by Boeing. Eat your heart out Tom Cruise, you’re looking at a real Navy pilot. Lt. Antel is a member of Navy Squadron VFA 211, the “Fighting Checkmates” and just finished two combat cruises from the USS Enterprise.

Dean Antel cuts the ribbon at the inauguration of the Houston Corps of Cadets. He is surrounded by representatives from Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee’s office. The event signaled the coming together of major universities and colleges around the area supporting leadership principles.
Dean Antel’s legacy, the proposed Houston Corps of Cadets (Air Force & Army ROTC) and UH Center for Applied Leadership facility projected to be built by 2012, pending funding, at the University of Houston
